Hearing music is one of my first memories. I don't remember what song it was or what band was performing the song. I just remember it being amazing. Growing up I listened to all kinds of music: my dad's country and Rod Stewart, my mom's oldies and 80's hits, and even my brother's cheesy ballads, hair metal and his Christian music. The radio was always on in my room (well, any room in the house that had a radio) and the car. One of my first words was "meegit" which was interpreted as "music" because I'd finally stop kicking my legs and shouting it when a melody was finally played.
When I entered the Elementary School world, I began to become exposed to other artists that weren't from the era of shoulder pads and big hair or sang about Ford trucks or Jesus-- I was introduced to pop music. I'm 23 years old so it's only natural that pop rock floats through my veins (along with copious amounts of coffee). I devoured all of it: Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Mandy Moore, S-Club 7, TLC, A*Teens, B*Witched, N'Sync, Christina Aguielera, Jessica Simpson, Hanson, Destiny's Child, the works. But one artist in particular stood out among the rest. Her music was one thing, but her personality was amazing. She was so cute and sweet and funny. I'll never forget how adorable her Southern accent is (while wondering why I don't have one) and how she always talked about being yourself and to never care what anyone else thought about you, just never take yourself too seriously and have fun and be kind.
How cute is she?
I was 8 years old when Britney Spears came out. I remember being so heartbroken about the Spice Girls being broken up, but that was immediately forgotten when I heard the first piano strokes of this classic:
What a phenomenal dancer & amazing performance:
Hell, I even loved this performance:
Funny Britney Moments:
While my taste of music is no longer limited to 90's pop, (it ranges from Bon Iver to Kendrick Lamar to Daft Punk to Avett Brothers to Local Natives to Dean Martin) Britney Spears will always be a major staple in my love for music and she is always in rotation in my ears and in my heart.
